Веќе подолго време и овде и во светот најгласни се исклучивите (во целиот политички спектар), оние кои мислат дека само тие се во право, а другите се глупи (поткупени, најмени од домашни или странски служби, изроди, релативизатори, апсолутизатори, предавници, курви, мурви, одберете етикета по свое нахоџење).
Тоа во САД се манифестира со сè поголемиот број на напади и протести против говорници на универзитетите во САД од страна на студентски групи кои едноставно не се согласуваат со тезите на говорниците. Исходот на таквите протести често е откажување на говори и предавања, а понекогаш се случуваат и инциденти и физички напади врз предавачите.
Овде пак, примери за неслушање на другиот колку сакаш. Од едниве што со години се курчат не одејќи по дебати (испод част им стана на оние кои до вчера ко деца се радуваа ако ги има на екран) до другиве кои викаа дека нема веќе потреба од никаков разговор, слушнале тие сè што требало (стварно слушнавте сè што требаше или само тоа што требаше да го слушнете?).
А додека важеа таквите постулати „не одиме по дебати“ и „нема што со нив да се разговара“, гневот и нетрпеливоста толку се наталожија што сега се чини малку доцна: дури и кога има дебата или разговор, тоа веќе не се слуша од дерења и простаклуци.
Ва таква атмосфера, двајца еминентни интелектуалци од комплетно спротивставени идеолошки и политички матрици, Корнел Вест и Роберт П. Џорџ решија дека е потребно заедно да потсетат на зборовите на Хајек:
„Доколку старите вистини сакаат да се задржат во човечките умови, тие мора да бидат преформулирани на јазикот и во согласност со концептите на идните генерации. Она што некогаш било нивен најмоќен израз, постепено толку се троши низ употреба, што престанува да пренесува точно одредено значење“.
Со други зборови, секоја генерација мора да биде потсетена дека слободата и идеалите на едно општество не смеат да станат излитени фрази, туку секоја генерација мора одново да ги научи, разбере и брани.
Па во изјавата ќе го напишат и ова:
„Овие денови стана премногу вообичаено луѓето да се имунизираат од мислења кои се критички кон оние кои владеат во нивните кругови. Понекогаш тоа се прави со сомневање во мотивите и стигматизација на поинаквите мислења, некогаш со прекинување на говорите, или со барање некој да биде исклучен (од кампусот, -н.з.). Се разбира, правото на мирно протестирање против нешто е свето. Но, пред да го искористиме тоа право, секој од нас би требало да се праша: А да не е подобро да го сослушам и да пробам да научам нешто од оној со кого не се согласувам?
Нашата подготвеност да слушаме и со почит да се занимаваме со оние со кои не се согласуваме (особено околу прашања од суштинска важност) придонесува кон виталноста на миљето во кое луѓе можат слободно да кажат што мислат, да размислуваат и за непопуларни ставови и да ги истражуваат линиите на аргументирање кои можеби ќе ги поткопаат утврдените начини на мислење. Ваков етос нè штити од догматизам и групно мислење, а двете се отровни и за здравјето на академските заедници и за функционирањето на демократијата“.
